Introduction

This small fragment from Kuyunjik contains a meager remains of a commentary on an astrological text, probably belonging to the great astrological series Enūma Anu Enlil. Although the exact text in which the present tablet comments is uncertain, it seems to be concerned with moon eclipses, and must therefore belong to Enūma Anu Enlil 15-22.

 

Some of the equations that this commentary preserves are in fact attested in other astrological commentaries: e.g. nabalkutu = lā tarāṣu, "'to turn upside down' (means) 'not to succeed'," which appears in line 4' of the present text, features in a number of other tablets.1 Similarly, the phrase mimma ul innezib, "nothing is left (out of the eclipse)" (l. 8') appears in other commentaries on moon eclipse omens, such as CCP 3.2.2.C and CCP 3.1.15.
